At the event, ‘Tackling CVD through Primary Health Care’, distinguished speakers included:

  • Salim Yusuf, President, World Heart Federation
  • Bongani Mayosi, President, Pan African Society of Cardiology
  • Carlos Garcia, Head of Asia-Pacific, Middle-East & African Countries, Novartis
  • Dr. D. Prabhakaran, Executive Director, Centre for Chronic Disease, India

Chair and panelists discussed the significant gaps in patient access to health care services for cardiovascular disease at the primary health care level across the world, practical solutions that had been mounted to date, and outstanding challenges facing policy makers and health system leaders.

Speaking on behalf of the Members of the Heart Failure Policy Network, Ed Harding raised specific talking points on the need to provide accreditation for non-physician health workers and heart-specialist nurses as an example of much needed innovation and strategic preparedness in cardiovascular disease – which joined with many other calls to reinvent primary health care to meet pressing sustainability challenges.
