Artificial intelligence (AI) position statement: our commitment to responsible use of AI
At HPP, we see artificial intelligence (AI) as a powerful enabler – but one that must be applied with care, integrity and purpose. As a trusted partner to our clients in health policy and system change, we are embedding AI into our work to enhance value while upholding the highest standards of quality, accuracy and intellectual property.
Our use of AI adheres to the following principles:
- Human oversight at every step: AI enhances our work – it does not replace human expertise. Any tasks conducted by AI tools are reviewed by our team to ensure they meet the rigorous standards our clients and stakeholders expect. We recognise the inherent bias in some AI-generated content and are careful to ensure our principles of equality, diversity and inclusion are not compromised.
- Careful and responsible use: We are selective in the AI tools that we use and how we use them. Every use case is assessed for appropriateness, and we never compromise on the quality or credibility of our outputs. We recognise that many large language models and generative AI tools are trained on material which is copyrighted, and as such we do not currently use AI to create images or illustrations. We never upload any information to open AI platforms which could put us at risk of inadvertently sharing our own or our clients’ intellectual property, or put us at risk of infringing copyright. Recognising the environmental impact of AI, we only use it when necessary.
- Transparency and compliance: We keep records of our use of AI on projects, to ensure complete transparency and compliance with our clients’ policies and requirements.
- Consistent use across the company: Our AI policy forms the basis of training we provide to our team on how they should and should not be using AI. The policy is reviewed regularly to ensure we keep pace with developments in AI tools and technologies.
Our commitment to using AI responsibly means we deliver maximum value to clients while maintaining accuracy and integrity – qualities that are essential to external impact. AI-based research tools are developing rapidly and, while we do not currently use AI for formal research, we look forward to a future when we are confident that they will deliver high-quality results that align with our principles and standards.
