New report urges governments worldwide to prioritise changing the trajectory of lung cancer
9 September 2025
HPP has developed a report with the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer’s (IASLC’s) Global Policy and Partnerships Committee urging national governments to champion a coordinated and comprehensive policy approach to change the trajectory of lung cancer outcomes worldwide.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, and the number of people affected continues to rise rapidly. Modifiable risk factors, such as active tobacco use, are responsible for the vast majority of lung cancer cases. Despite this, lung cancer remains underprioritised in national health agendas.
The report, which was launched in Barcelona at the World Lung Cancer Conference 2025, outlines opportunities for policymakers to enact change to reduce risk, improve earlier detection and improve outcomes. It also highlights best-practice examples of countries that are tackling the challenges faced by people with lung cancer, including Australia, Belgium, Brazil, England, Japan, South Africa, Taiwan and the US.
We hope that Transforming lung cancer care: how effective policy can improve outcomes will help drive concerted action to make lung cancer a priority on political agendas.
