HPP has produced a global report and infographic on behalf of the Speak Up for COPD coalition, urging policymakers to tackle the human and societal costs of the disease.
The new materials outline the debilitating impact of COPD on people’s quality of life and highlight the key areas for policy- and decision-makers to focus on to reverse the trajectory of worsening health outcomes and inequities. Priority areas include increasing prevention efforts; ensuring timely access to treatment via proactive detection; facilitating access to comprehensive care; and strengthening government responses.
The report provides case studies from countries including France, India and Egypt, and highlights examples of best practice to serve as inspiration for policy- and decision-makers.
COPD is an often life-threatening lung condition. It affects between 213 million and 391 million people worldwide – estimates vary because many people can go undiagnosed, and untreated, for years. The disease can affect all aspects of a person’s life; many people living with it lose their independence and are unable to work.
Prevalence of COPD tends to follow existing health and social inequities: the highest rates are typically seen among people from a lower socioeconomic position, who are more likely to be exposed to risk factors including smoking and poor air quality.
Policies that encourage active prevention and investment are crucial for addressing COPD. We hope these new resources will help galvanise the commitment needed to make it an urgent health priority around the world.
