New resources highlight the potential of computational pathology to transform cancer diagnosis

17 November 2025

Computational pathology has the potential to transform cancer care by enabling faster, more accurate and more personalised diagnosis. This innovative technology uses software – often powered by artificial intelligence – to analyse digital images of cells, helping doctors detect disease earlier and make more precise treatment decisions. As the number of cancer cases rises globally, placing health systems under increasing pressure, computational pathology offers a vital opportunity to improve efficiency and outcomes across the diagnostic pathway.

Despite its promise, access to computational pathology is currently limited. Barriers such as insufficient investment in digital infrastructure, workforce training and equitable implementation continue to prevent widespread adoption.

To raise awareness and encourage action, The Health Policy Partnership (HPP) has developed an animated video and infographic on the value of computational pathology, produced in collaboration with AstraZeneca and launched to coincide with the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) AI & Digital Oncology Congress 2025. These resources provide an accessible overview of the technology’s benefits, the barriers to its implementation and the steps needed to realise its potential.

With these resources, HPP seeks to inspire policymakers and health system leaders to take action so that more people can benefit from this transformative technology.
