Building environmental considerations into the evaluation of health interventions

HPP worked with the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition to develop a discussion paper on building environmental consideration into the evaluation of health interventions

Context

The past decade has seen growing commitments across the health sector to minimise the impact of healthcare on the environment.

Achieving this will mean finding acceptable ways to incorporate environmental considerations into our assessment of health interventions. How to do this in practice remains complex, and will have implications across the entire spectrum of decisions related to health interventions.

To date, these discussions have been most prominent within the health technology assessment (HTA) community – with several HTA agencies already including environmental impact in their assessments. As of yet, there is no agreed methodology for integrating environmental considerations into these assessment frameworks, and several methodological issues remain. Nonetheless, these evolving discussions raise important questions about how we, as a society, can integrate environmental considerations into our decisions as we shape the future of healthcare without ever compromising health outcomes or population health.

What we’ve achieved

HPP worked with the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition to develop a discussion paper outlining key considerations and guiding principles for stakeholders to be aware of and adhere to as environmental factors are integrated into the assessment of health interventions, using a care pathway approach.

Key partners and stakeholders

The paper was developed with the following contributors, with drafting support from HPP:

  • Fiona Adshead, Chair, Sustainable Healthcare Coalition
  • Rachel Castle, Director Sustainability Policy, GSK
  • Prescille de la Tour, CSR Head of Planet and Health, Sanofi
  • Richad Henderson, Director Sustainability, GSK
  • Niels Lund, Senior Director, Global Advocacy and Partnerships, Global Health Equity, Novo Nordisk
  • Keith Moore, Project Coordinator, Sustainable Healthcare Coalition
  • Anna Puggina, Market Access Manager, GSK
  • Glyn Richards, Group Director of Sustainability, BUPA
  • Joice Valentim, Global HTA Strategy Lead, Roche

Project funding
