Overview

HPP convened an international, multidisciplinary advisory group to co-create an innovative policy report that positions trust as a foundation for more equitable health systems. HPP built a petition for change with an accompanying toolkit showing steps that governments, healthcare providers and other stakeholders can take to strengthen trust among people from under-represented groups.

Overview
I have never been prouder to be associated with any publication. You managed to take a complex, challenging issue and provide clarity and a positive way forward… I have no doubt it will be a much referenced and relied-on publication to assist with influencing policy.

The challenge

The past decades have seen growing awareness of health disparities. And, against this landscape, people’s trust in health systems is fragile. This is particularly true among people from traditionally under-represented groups, as they are most at risk of facing barriers and discrimination. Healthcare delivery, communication materials, interventions and research rarely reflect the diverse tapestry that makes up our societies, and the way healthcare is designed and delivered often does not reflect the diverse needs of the communities it serves. It is perhaps unsurprising that many members of traditionally under-represented groups find it difficult to trust health systems that do not represent or serve them.

Sanofi initiated A Million Conversations to help rebuild trust in healthcare, and commissioned HPP to lead its policy-shaping efforts.

What we achieved

  • We convened, and have acted as secretariat for, the A Million Conversations advisory group, which includes leading health equity experts from patient advocacy, civic society and academia.
  • We published a landmark policy report that frames issues around trust. The report focuses on four traditionally under-represented groups and offers strategic recommendations to governments and other stakeholders to cement trust as a foundation for more equitable health systems.
  • The report was launched at a webinar in July 2024 and presented during sessions at the 2024 Global Health Literacy Summit and the World Health Summit.
  • Building on this work, we have developed an online petition to drive engagement and momentum for change; a supporting toolkit contained tangible steps that stakeholders can take to enhance trust across health systems.
