Why is it so important to engage patients and the public in policymaking?

10 May 2023

We will be hosting a joint webinar with the Health and Global Policy Institute – ‘How can patients and the public participate meaningfully in health policymaking?’ – on 23 May at 10:00–10:45 BST/18:00–18:45 JST.

Involving patients and the public in healthcare policymaking can increase trust, build capacity among those participating and help decision-makers learn from valuable accounts of lived experience. As this involvement is becoming more common, we need to ensure that it is valued as highly as other forms of evidence.

This webinar will provide an opportunity to discover what is needed to allow patients and the public to feed into policy design in a meaningful way and why this is so important. Patient advocates and experts in policy will discuss lessons learnt from successful engagement in Japan and Europe, as well as the opportunities for participatory policy development offered by the digitisation of healthcare.
