HPP collaborates with the Global Heart Hub on patient guide to shared-decision making in heart valve disease

24 February 2022

The Health Policy Partnership (HPP) and the Global Heart Hub are pleased to publish a new patient guide to shared decision-making for people living with heart valve disease. The guide was developed with input from an international Advisory Board consisting of patient and clinical experts.

People diagnosed with heart valve disease are often confronted with a wide range of treatment options, and many will eventually require a heart valve repair or replacement. The most recent guidelines from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) state that ‘the patient and their family should be thoroughly informed and assisted in their decision on the best treatment option’, but too often this does not take place.

Shared decision-making for people with heart valve disease: A patient guide aims to empower people with heart valve disease to express their goals and treatment preferences to their care team. Shared-decision making has been proven to increase patient satisfaction and quality of life – we hope that this guide can assist in improving outcomes for people with heart valve disease.

We have developed a full patient guide, as well as a one-page summary. Download them below:
