Overview
HPP was commissioned by the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) to develop a policy framework and resources to support policymakers in implementing immunisation programmes spanning a full life course.
The challenge
Immunisation is one of the most cost-effective public health interventions available. However, programmes are often narrowly focused on children and do not reflect the benefits immunisation can bring to people across the life course. Such gaps in programme planning and delivery mean that immunisations are either not available to the people who need them – such as young people, pregnant women and carers – or have low uptake.
What we achieved
- We developed a first-of-its-kind framework to assess how different countries were performing in policies and programmes promoting a life-course approach to immunisation. The framework drew on the latest available evidence as well as interviews with leading stakeholders in six countries.
- Our findings were then compiled into a policy narrative, which advocates can use to explain the importance and impact of taking a life-course approach to immunisation. It included data and examples of evidence-based and effective interventions to maximise uptake among key groups across the life course.
- The narrative was followed by six country-specific resources outlining the situation, case studies of best practice to inspire others and a policy checklist offering a visual overview of key gaps specific to each country.
- We also produced an infographic to support advocacy efforts around the European Commission’s Global Vaccination Summit in September 2019.
- Our work was shared widely on social media and in online articles, including publications in Health Awareness and Value of Vaccines.
