Overview
We worked closely with the Speak Up for COPD coalition to develop a set of global and national-level advocacy resources that highlighted the state of COPD prevention and care. The resources aimed to inspire respiratory experts, patient and clinical advocates, and health system leaders to improve COPD care.

The challenge
Every hour, 425 people are estimated to die from COPD. Despite the availability of effective interventions, entrenched system barriers continue to prevent timely diagnosis and optimal care.
Speak Up for COPD is a global coalition established to raise awareness and drive action on COPD. The coalition needed an evidence-based narrative and resources to compel policymakers to invest sufficiently in addressing COPD.
As a founding partner of Speak Up for COPD, AstraZeneca approached HPP to support Speak Up in this effort. Speak Up partners and national chapters of GAAPP, the patient organisation that runs its secretariat, were also involved in this project.
What we achieved
- We developed the Global State of COPD, which was launched at the 2024 GAAPP Summit in Vienna. We presented the findings to more than 50 patient advocates from around the world, equipping them to use the materials in their own local contexts.
- To ensure impact at country level, we produced tailored policy profiles for ten countries: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Malaysia, Nigeria, Poland, Saudi Arabia and the UK. Patient advocates have praised the resources for filling a critical gap in data and policy insights, and for providing them with powerful new tools for advocacy.
- The resources have since been amplified globally by GAAPP and other Speak Up partners, ensuring COPD remains visible on the international agenda.
- Building on this momentum, we are now developing further policy profiles for a number of countries, to strengthen COPD advocacy capacity worldwide.
